Vaccination and immunisation programs
COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) virus. It affects people of all ages. Older adults and people with certain medical conditions have an increased risk of severe disease or death from COVID-19.
Childhood Immunisation
We provide childhood immunisations based on the National Immunisation Program. For more information about specific childhood vaccinations, please refer to this schedule: National Immunisation Program Schedule
Adult Vaccination
Vaccinations for adolescents, pregnancy, and at risks groups are available at BMCOL, either private or through National Immunisation Program. For more information about specific vaccinations offered though NIP, please refer to this schedule: National Immunisation Program Schedule
Flu Vaccines
- Flu vaccines will be available from April each year.
- Government-funded flu vaccines are free for children (6 months to 4 years), adults 65+, pregnant women, those with certain medical conditions, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
- Private flu vaccines are around $25 per person if you’re not eligible for the government-funded vaccine.
COVID-19 vaccination
COVID-19 vaccination recommendations and funding arrangements changed on 1 October 2026. Recommendations depend on age, health conditions and individual circumstances. The Australian Immunisation Handbook has detailed advice for adults and children.
Under the National Immunisation Program, COVID-19 vaccination is available at no charge to eligible Medicare cardholders in these groups:
- Adults aged 75 years and over: one dose every 6 months
- Adults aged 65–74 years: one dose every 12 months
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 50–74 years: one dose every 12 months
- Adults aged 18 years and over with severe immunocompromise: one dose every 12 months
People outside these groups can speak with a healthcare professional about whether vaccination is appropriate. Private vaccination may be available, with a cost.
BMCOL GPs are happy to talk to you about all vaccinations you may or may not need. Book an appointment now.
